Meet Mike Wons, President, Civix Government
Where is home?
I was born and raised in the western suburbs of Chicago. I split my time between our Chicago home, Tampa FL, and United Airlines.
Where did you go to school?
Lots of places. Education has been and is a journey for me (just like transformation). I started out at EIU went there for a year, came home, got married, went to Devry University and got a certificate in computer programming, went through the management development program at Aurora University and finished up my Bachelor’s degree at Governor’s State University going to school at night while working during the day. From there 8 years later I went on and got my executive master’s education at the Kellogg Management Institute at Northwestern Graduate School of management. After a long journey, when I did finally get my BA at 26, my wife had a surprise party for me and gave me an awesome T-Shirt – – – -GADCE Graduate.
Tell us about your work at Civix?
I have an awesome opportunity to work with some of the smartest and most innovative folks in the technology and government industry. We are working as a team to transform the public sector by delivering simple, modern and secure SaaS based GovCloud hosted solutions. Focus is on solving complex problems and I am all about open industry platforms to removed barriers to success. We are all in this together.
What are you most proud of?
Married since I was 19, my KIDS are what I am most proud of (God’s gift from heaven). I have 4 kids, all graduates of Illinois Universities. Currently I have 4 grandkids and another on the way in July.
What is your professional interacting style?
I learned a long time ago that the most important leadership skill is LISTENING. That is the core of my interaction style. Most folks do not see that as it is an underrated hidden skill in leadership. I am passionate, I care about people and have always been based on the principle that “folks are only as good as the opportunities that they are given”. We are all where we are at because someone believed in us, as a team we need to believe and empower our teams.
What are your strengths?
Hi-energy, passionate and empathetic with a laser focus on GSD. When someone says NO, or don’t do that, or you cant do that, it only does one thing to me…and that is to motivate me to try harder.
What is a fun fact about you?
- Steps – I will not go to bed unless I have 10K steps for the day. Last year had 5,428,309 steps.
- Known as the king of dad jokes, I do like to tell jokes.
- Have run 2 marathons, 6 half-marathons and completed 5 century bike rides (100 miles). In addition to 3 adventure races and many 5K’s.
